Photographer Eddy Van Gestel takes all his photographs in Kenya.
Captivating landscapes and sublime, intense portraits!
He has gained international renown thanks to his magnificent art books: “Africa XL,” “Perla Nera,” “Pure Black,” “Signs of Life,”
“Opening Doors,” “Just Passing By,” “She,” and his 2025 book “Perpetuum.”
Over the years his style has become more serene and restrained, stripped of any excess, complex perspectives and difficult angles.
To him photography is a quest for a magical and mysterious world, where there’s a very fine line between reality and impression. And though his pictures have that unmistakable “touch of Africa”, they exude a universal atmosphere so they transcend the ethnic photography category. His work is defined by shapes, lines and structures, more so than by the scenery itself. Whether he is shooting portraits, wildlife, still lifes or landscapes, all his pictures have one thing in common: they draw their graphic strength from their simplicity.

"Discreet and seemingly insignificant subjects can reveal unexpected beauty when viewed from a different angle. More often than not, the subjects of my photos are subordinate to their hidden expressive power. By using the right type of film, the right composition, the right lighting, and the right processing, I try to do justice to that power. I want to move the viewer, without overdoing it, as if they were savoring a glass of fine wine, or admiring the lines of a building or the curves of a beautiful woman." Eddy Van Gestel
The result is a collection of very impactful photos.
Eddy Van Gestel's work undeniably adds something extra to the interiors he embellishes, in a harmonious way, without being intrusive.
