Ben Thouard

Originally from Toulon in the South-East of France, I grew up by the sea.
Coming from a family of six, I was introduced to surfing by my older brothers at a very young age, which gave me a deep love for the sea. This sport became a drug that would guide the rest of my life. While feeding my passion for surfing, I discovered the world of art and enrolled in painting classes. Naturally I painted the sea and the waves. It was only in my teens that I discovered photography when I stumbled upon an old camera in our attic. I bought some films, I shot, I missed, I re-shot … and then I discovered an incessant passion for the world of the still image. It was decided, I would make it my profession! When I finished high school, I managed to convince my parents to go to a photography school. I left for Paris with a camera and a 50mm. I spent the first year shooting all over Paris, consuming dozens or hundreds of Kodak TRI-X 400 films that I developed in my bathroom and shot at school. As a thirst for knowledge, I learn everything I can, I don’t count the hours! Only this obsession with surfing and the sea caught up with me and made life in Paris difficult. So I left school in the middle of my second year and flew to Hawaii! January 2006, I’m 19 years old, I land on the island of Maui, armed with my homemade waterproof tank (because of a lack of means) and I spend 3 months swimming, every day, whatever the weather, on the famous spot of Ho’okipa.
