Christelle Crokaert

Being in contact with nature and being able to discover all its different aspects day after day has always made me feel at peace and has given me a sense of “belonging” in a way.
My art is intrinsically linked to my feeling of the elements around me. My love for abstract painting most likely comes from my love for nature and its elements.
As an artist at heart, I have been drawing since my childhood.
When I was 13 years old, I won a drawing competition organised by “Amnesty International”.
The theme of the competition was “People and Society”.
Later, I decided to study social work and became a specialised educator.
I worked for 8 years in psychiatry in a closed ward at the Jean Titeca hospital.
This experience was very rich on a human level and my artistic soul helped me to build special and trusting relationships with patients.
Mental illness and creativity have long been associated with artists such as Van Gogh or Maupassant and the psychiatric environment, however remote it may seem from painting, has been a real source of inspiration for me and continues to be so today. My last job as an educator was as coordinator of an emergency centre for asylum seekers in Belgium. In the summer of 2021, I decided to leave everything to devote 100% of my time to my art.

In terms of art, I am self-taught.
I don't think about my paintings in advance, I let myself go when I create, I don't try to send a message or represent something specific.
I would describe my art as spontaneous and intuitive.
I love experimenting with new techniques and working with different types of media.
I work on canvas, aluminium, metal, wood, paper, recycled plastic, glass, etc...
I love to see how the pigments react to the different media and I adapt my technique accordingly.
Basically, I learn something new every time I work on a new type of medium.
What I like most about abstract art is that everyone is allowed to have their own perception.
What I feel when creating a piece has absolutely no impact on the other person's view.
Each eye has its own view and for me that is the beauty of abstract art.
