In his work, Johan Van Oeckel starts from the pure form, which he then loads with information. Color is an important signifier here, because it automatically refers to a certain zeitgeist. Every work by Johan Van Oeckel says « I am » instead of « I become », because he remains faithful to the pure idea and there is no progression in it. He provides the viewer with a visual enjoyment that exists outside of any specific place or time, a universal experience. Each work is a dose of sacral geometry, a personal icon that the viewer may appropriate in all sovereignty. In his practice, Johan Van Oeckel opens up the playing field of abstraction in a broad and fascinating way. The result is a visual language that refreshes, surprises and produces new types of energizing symbols.
